John 17:3 “The Father is the Only True God” | Carey Clark & J. Dan Gill |
One verse that God used powerfully in my life is John 17:3, where Jesus prays to the Father, and He said, and this this is interesting. |
John 17:03 AND THIS IS LIFE ETERNAL, THAT THEY MIGHT KNOW THEE THE ONLY TRUE GOD, AND JESUS CHRIST, WHOM THOU HAST SENT. [Deuteronomy 6:04; Isaiah 42:08; Malachi 2:10; Mark 12:29-30, 32; Romans 3:30; 1 Corinthians 8:04, 06; Ephesians 4:06; 1 Timothy 2:05; James 2:19]. [What is life eternal ? THAT THEY MIGHT KNOW THEE THE ONLY TRUE GOD, AND JESUS CHRIST]. |
By the way, there are several times that the Bible talks about Eternal Life. |
In John 3:16, a verse that most Christians know by heart, it says “For God so loved the world that He gave His Only Begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have Everlasting Life.” |
He doesn’t define Everlasting Life but He speaks of Everlasting Life. |
One of the speakers that we heard here this morning was talking about the time when everybody left Jesus. |
Jesus said to His disciples “Will you also go away?” and they said “To whom shall we go? You have the words of Eternal Life.” |
In Romans 6:23 it says that “The wages of sin is death but the gift of God is Eternal Life through Jesus Christ Our Lord.” |
But it doesn’t define Eternal Life. |
There is just one place in the Bible where Eternal Life is defined – in John 17:3, Jesus is praying to His Father and He says “And this is Eternal Life.” |
It struck me one day as I was thinking about that verse, this is Eternal Life. |
Whatever comes after this has got to be the greatest truth in the universe. |
Jesus Himself said “What shall it profit a man if he gained the whole world and lose his own soul?” |
Here, in John 17:3, Jesus says “And this is Eternal Life”. |
We have got to stop there, and say what is it? What is Eternal Life? “That they know You.” |
“That they know You, the Only True God, and Jesus Christ; which means Jesus the Anointed One, whom You have sent.” |
There we see the Father. Jesus didn’t say “that they may know us, the Only True God”. |
He said “That they may know You” – “You, the Only True God.” |
Jesus Himself in that verse is clear; it cannot be any clearer. |
I saw that there are two things there: |
First, to know that the Father is the Only True God is to know His identity; but that is not enough. |
This is where all of us need to be careful. |
It is one thing to know the identity. |
I know the identity of the president of the United States; I know the identity of a lot of people that I have not met. |
I don’t know them, but this is knowing Him, knowing Him is knowing His identity. |
That He is the Only True God but knowing Him is “knowing Him, and loving Him, and experiencing Him, knowing His character, knowing His love. |
Then, secondly, not only knowing Him, but to know the One that He sent – the Lord Jesus. |
