Jesus tells us that God made the Sabbath for man |
Mark 2:27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: |
|
Seventh day Sabbath still binding in the New Testament |
[Sunday being the first day of the week – except on recent calendars!] |
Matthew 28:1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. |
Elsewhere Scripture is given in more detail; 7th day Sabbath proven beyond a shadow of doubt |
[Most people being aware that the Jews keep Saturday as their Sabbath] |
Luke 23:50 And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just: |
Luke 23:51 (The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God. |
Luke 23:52 This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. |
Luke 23:53 And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid. |
Luke 23:54 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on. |
Luke 23:55 And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid. |
Luke 23:56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment. |
|
Luke 24:1 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. |
|
Law still binding |
Isaiah 51:4 Hearken unto me, my people; and give ear unto me, O my nation: for a law shall proceed from me, and I will make my judgment to rest for a light of the people. |
Isaiah 51:5 My righteousness is near; my salvation is gone forth, and mine arms shall judge the people; the isles shall wait upon me, and on mine arm shall they trust. |
Isaiah 51:6 Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished. |
Isaiah 51:7 Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings. |
|
Do away with God’s Law and you do away with sin! |
[Do away with sin and you do away with Calvary!] |
Romans 7:7 What shall we say then? is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. |
Romans 7:8 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead. |
Romans 7:9 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. |
Romans 7:10 And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. |
Romans 7:11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me. |
Romans 7:12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. |
|
Christ confirms that God’s Law remains valid |
Matthew 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. |
Matthew 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. |
|
But wasn’t the law nailed to the cross? – if there were 3 laws [the laws of the land, the Jewish ceremonial laws and God’s laws] – what was nailed to the cross? |
[The Ceremonial (Ritual) Law was nailed to the cross.] |
Colossians 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; |
|
Ephesians 2:15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; |
|
Other New Testament Law-keeping texts |
Hebrews 8:10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: |
|
Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: |
Romans 5:13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. |
|
Romans 5:20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: |
|
That’s it! – we’re under grace now – we can make void the Law of God – we can carry on sinning! – can’t we? |
Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? |
Romans 6:2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? |
Then the Word of God follows up with a repeat to ensure that we are without excuse: |
Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. |
Romans 6:15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. |
|
But we don’t want to be subject to the Law – we just want the Love of Jesus – won’t that do? |
Can’t we have His Love, without obedience to His Law? |
Romans 2:11 For there is no respect of persons with God. |
Romans 2:12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; |
|
Romans 4:15 Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression. |
|
Look – I don’t want to be subject to God’s law – it means that I must repent of my sins. |
I just want Christ as my Saviour – but I don’t want to submit to His authority |
Isn’t there an easy way where I can claim Him and say “I’m saved” |
|
Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. |
|
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; |
|
Romans 3:31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law. |
|
Matthew 19:17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. |
|
Luke 23:56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment. |
|
John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. |
|
OK – so Jesus said I’ve got to keep His 10 Commandments – well, will 9 do? – That 4th one – it’s a problem – you see, my church meets on Sunday |
James 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. |
|
Other New Testament Commandment-keeping texts |

Famine of hearing God’s Word |
Amos 8:11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: |
|
The duty of the Christian – to preach the Gospel of Christ – while man can be saved |
Matthew 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. |
|

2 Timothy 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. |
2 Timothy 4:5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. |
|
And even if it be unplateable to man – don’t change God’s Word |
Revelation 22:18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: |
Revelation 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. |
|
Paul’s battle to serve the Law of God |
Romans 7:7 What shall we say then? is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. |
Romans 7:8 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead. |

Romans 7:11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me. |
Romans 7:12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. |
Romans 7:13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful. |
Romans 7:14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. |
Romans 7:15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. |
Romans 7:16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. |
Romans 7:17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. |
Romans 7:18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. |
Romans 7:19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. |
Romans 7:20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. |
Romans 7:21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. |
Romans 7:22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: |
Romans 7:23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. |
Romans 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? |
Romans 7:25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. |
|
Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. |
Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. |
Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: |
Romans 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. |
Romans 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. |
Romans 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. |
Romans 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. |
|
